Matsumae is an ancient castle town located just west of Cape Shirakami, the southernmost point in Hokkaido. This charming town, which cooperates with the Besançon municipality in many areas, is the only city in Hokkaido to have a castle. In spring, 10,000 cherry trees bloom here, making it a very popular tourist spot during this season. The reconstructed village, which offers a glimpse into the Matsumae of the Edo period, is worth a visit. Matsumae is about 2 hours drive from Hakodate.
