The area still has some western style buildings from the late 19th century: the Russian Orthodox Church, founded in 1861, the Old Public Hall of Hakodate ward, the former city hall from 1910, and the former British consulate from 1913. In this sloping area, you can see beautiful traditional Japanese houses, small gardens and enjoy a splendid view of the harbor, Hachima-zaka Slope. On the quayside, you can still see the large red brick warehouses now housing restaurants or stalls selling seafood.

Construit sur la colline à proximité du port ce quartier semblable à celui de Nagasaki permet de découvrir des constructions réalisés par les occidentaux sur cet île. Les deux édifices religieux principaux possèdent une architecture remarquable. Un circuit à ne pas négliger pour une bonne connaissance de l'évolution de cette île.
