Founded nearly 630 years ago, the present Tsuruga-jo Castle is a reconstruction dating from 1965. In 2001, the two terraced houses attached to the tower building were restored according to the traditional methods of the Edo period. Tsuruga-jo is now the only castle in Japan with red tile roofs (restored in 2011). It also houses a local history museum and a four-century-old tea ceremony room.
