This is the hill where the Byakkō-tai (White Tiger Company made up of young men) came to defend the values of the shōgunat. When they saw the castle in flames, they believed in defeat and decided to commit seppuku. At the top of the hill are the nineteen tombs while downhill from it, a small museum on the subject, the Byakkō-tai Memorial Hall, allows one to learn even more about this cult site. Not far away, Sazae-dō is a hexagonal tower dating from 1796 containing the layout of the 33 pilgrimage temples for Kannon in Kansai.
