Shingu Kumano Shrine was founded in 1089. It is most famous for the Nagatoko-do hall which has no walls or doors. Its huge thatched roof is supported by 44 wooden pillars. This hall was used as a training center for monks. It is now listed as a nationally important cultural property. The 30-meter-high giant gingko tree in front of Nagatoko-do is a natural monument in Kitakata City. In autumn, during the autumn color season, the sight is breathtaking.
