Built in 1607 by Masamune Date, the samurai who founded Sendai, this beautiful Shinto shrine is covered in black lacquer, which contrasts with the beautiful, colourfully patterned beams that support the roof. Preservation and repair work was completed in October 2004. For the past 300 years, the Matsutaki Matsuri, an impressive festival to celebrate the New Year, has been held here in January, bringing together thousands of worshippers around sacred fires and traditional processions. An experience not to be missed.
