The Gassan-jinja shrine is located at the summit of Mount Gassan. It attracts many pilgrims, but is a little disappointing in itself, with the exception of the purification ritual you must undergo before entering. On the other hand, the walk to get there is magnificent! Shonai Kotsu is reached by bus four times daily from Haguro-san from July to August and on weekends and public holidays in September (55 minutes). Alternatively, it can be reached in two hours by bus from Tsuruoka station for ¥2,140.
