The Gassan-jinja shrine is located at the top of Mount Gassan. It attracts many pilgrims, but it is a bit disappointing in itself, except for the purification ritual you have to undergo before entering. On the other hand, the walk to get there is beautiful! Shonai Kotsu has four round trips by bus from Haguro-san every day from July to August and on weekends and holidays in September (55 minutes, ¥1,590 each way). Otherwise, it can be reached in one hour by bus from Tsuruoka Station for ¥2100.
