These two temples have the astonishing feature of housing mummified monks. This ascetic practice was used until the 19th century, when it was banned. The monks tried to reach enlightenment through fasting and were buried alive, still in a state of meditation. The temples are located at the foot of Mount Yudono, considered the key site of the three sacred mountains of Dewa. Since ancient times, it is strictly forbidden to discuss or even ask about what has been seen on Mount Yudono.
