MOTSU-JI
It is said that the Chūson-ji, established in 850 by Ennin, had as its great rival the neighboring temple of Mōtsū-ji. All that remains today are the foundation stones and the garden-jōdo-en (garden of paradise). The latter in any case gives an idea of what the sophistication of the place may have been like during the Heian period. The temple and its gardens host the jōgyōdō Hatsuka-yasai, a festival in which ancient dances (Ennen-no-Mai) are performed, on January 20. The style, which is quite rare, is similar to the Byōdō-in of the Kyōto area.
