GOHYAKU RAKAN
Three kilometers southwest of Tōno, near the small shrine Unedori-jinja, dedicated to the deity of marriages, are the five hundred disciples of Buddha (Gohyaku Rakan). These sculptures, dating from 1782, were carved in the rock by a monk in order to remember the martyrdom of the people who perished from famine in 1754, due to bad harvests. This monk wished to appease the souls of the deceased. The place today still has a very special atmosphere. The setting is magnificent with the moss covering the rock, among a luxuriant nature.
