The samurai quarter of Kakunodate once housed 80 families. It is a unique testimony to samurai architecture and housing. Today, some of these samurai houses (-Ke) are still intact and open to the public. Two of them stand out for their size and quality: the Aoyagi House and the Ishiguro House. Other houses worth visiting are the Odano House, the Karawada House, the Iwahashi House and the Matsumoto House. In spring, the cherry trees lining the streets add to the charm of this pretty neighborhood.
