The museum houses a nice collection of western paintings (Picasso, Rembrandt, Goya...) from the collection of the Masakichi Hirano Art Foundation. It is especially known for a huge canvas of 3,65 m by 20,50 m realized by Tsuguharu Foujita and representing the festivals of Akita. The museum aims to encourage the culture of art appreciation. The museum building itself, designed by Tadao Ando, is worth a visit. There is a small café and a shop. A highly recommended visit for art lovers.
