The temple was built on a hill after the castle was completed. The daimyō succeeded in attracting the various Zen sects. Hirosaki soon became a temple town in the shadow of the castle. The main gate dates from 1692, and on its floors are statues of gohyaku Rakan (500 rakan, "illustrious men" or "those who have attained enlightenment"). The belfry contains a bell dating from 1306. The surrounding area, called Zenringai, is a pleasant walk.
