This road was used to transport salt from the Sea of Japan to Matsumoto, then to catch up with the main road through the Kiso Valley to Nagoya. You can follow this road for several hours, especially in the section that joins the Otari Museum (Otari Kyōdokan), just a few minutes from Minami Otari station, in Matsuzawa-guchi. This small museum traces the history of the township from prehistoric times, and features the footprint of a prehistoric animal.
