During the Edo period, Okuya served as the second honjin in Tsumago. With the abolition of laws concerning the use of wood, the master of the Meiji period decided to reconstruct it, using charpente wood (hinoki: cypress). The house was completed in 1877. It was the most important house of Tsumago, and it welcomed the Meiji Emperor in 1881. The Princess Kazunomiya lived there one night while she was going to marry the Shōgun. the designers at the time caricatured history, like the marriage of the fox and the mouse.
