This part of the city was built around the middle of the Edo period (1615-1868). It is now a preservation area for a large group of traditional buildings. Old inns such as Ikomaya and Matsushiroya can be enjoyed here. Kami-sagaya and Shimo-sagaya are good examples of traditional dwellings. In the Enmei Jizō-dōen shrine is a sculpture of Jizō, discovered in 1815 by a fisherman. Tsumago Station was the 42nd of 69 stations in the Nakasendo. A remarkable visit.
