The Kusakabe family was a family of rich merchants and financiers of the Edo period. Their house burned down in 1879. They decided to rebuild it using magnificent materials and volumes corresponding to their power. One can distinguish the section of the stores separated from the section of the apartments. Note the beams, wide posts, sloping roofs and low eaves, typical of the snowy areas in Japan.
