Every morning, the city of Takayama wakes up with two markets, which are held from 7am (8am in winter) to about noon. You will have the choice (and why not both) between the Miyagawa market, along the eponymous river, in the old town, and the Jinya-mae market in front of the Takayama Jinya. You will also be spoilt for choice. The stalls offer local handicrafts, food to eat on the go (Hida beef again) and local products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. Very pleasant.
