Every year, this temple plays host to one of Japan's three most unusual festivals, that of the naked man: hadaka matsuri! Nearly 9,000 men, dressed in sumotori-style traditional loincloths(fundoshi), attempt to retrieve sacred good-luck sticks(shingi). The festival takes place on the third Saturday in February. The temple was founded between 770 and 780, but was largely destroyed by fire in 1229. Today, a few remarkable buildings remain.
