OKAYAMA CASTLE
Connected to Kōraku-en Garden by a small bridge, Okayama-jō Castle, or the Golden Raven, owes its nickname to its dark gray facades. Some use the adjective "black" in contrast to the white of the famous Himeji Castle in the eponymous town. Although Okayama-jō Castle is not one of the five castles designated as national treasures, it is still a remarkable castle, especially from the outside, majestic and overlooking the Asahi River. Its keep was rebuilt in 1966 after damage from air raids during World War II. Some ornaments, such as golden gargoyles, were added in 1996 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its foundation. Built during the Azuchi-Momoya period in the late 16th century, it was not completed until two decades later by the feudal lord Ukita Hideie. Inside, it has the particularity to be composed of six floors, but on three levels, and to have a lift... The museum displaying ancient armor, the view of the Kōraku-en, and the area where you can enjoy appetizing fruit ice cream are the main assets of this place. All around the compound, you can see the traces of 35 small defensive towers. Only four of them have withstood the ravages of time, including the famous Moon Tower built in 1620, but also 21 entrance gates. Of course, if you come to visit it during the hanami period (cherry blossoms), your stroll will be even more beautiful and pleasant.
