ROUTE SHIMAMANI KAIDO
Honored by CNN News as one of the world's most beautiful bike paths, the Shimani Kaidō route, which starts in Onimichi, is about 70 km long. The route connects six islands and spans the Seto Inland Sea to Imabari. The route can be completed in two days for the more contemplative. The aficionados of two-wheelers call it the holy land of the cyclist. During this trip, you will have the opportunity to taste the local specialties based on seafood or citrus fruits and why not explore these famous islands in more depth. Innoshima, the first one after Mukaishima, is on the other side of the bridge. It is said to have been home to a famous pirate family in the 14th century. Ikuchijima, the island of lemons and octopus fishing, will delight you with its izakayas and sculptures exposed to the wind. You will discover Ōmishima, the largest of the Shimanami Kaido islands, after walking across the Tatara cable-stayed bridge. On the program are the Ōyamazumi-jinja shrine for culture and the Tatara onsen for relaxation. Hakatajima is then known for its salt and Ōshima, finally, for its Yoshiumi Rose Park, the last stop before Imabari City on Shikoku Island. You can rent bikes there (here for example: shimanami-cycle.or.jp/rental/english) for ¥2,000 per day minimum. You can rent tandems, electric bikes or electric racing bikes. It is a recommended experience, especially during the beautiful spring and autumn months.
