ROUTE SHIMAMANI KAIDO
Recognized by CNN News as one of the world's most beautiful cycle paths, the Shimani Kaidō route, which starts in Onimichi, is around 70 km long. The route links six islands and spans the Seto Inland Sea to Imabari. For the more contemplative, the route can be completed in two days. Two-wheeled aficionados call it the holy land of the cyclist. On this trip, you'll have plenty of time to sample local seafood and citrus specialities, and why not explore these famous islands in greater depth. Innoshima, the first after Mukaishima, lies on the other side of the bridge. It is said to have been home to a famous pirate family in the 14th century. Ikuchijima, the island of lemons and octopus fishing, will delight you with its izakayas and sculptures exposed to the wind. You'll discover Ōmishima, the largest of the Shimanami Kaido islands, after crossing the Tatara cable-stayed bridge. On the program are the Ōyamazumi-jinja shrine for culture and the Tatara onsen for relaxation. Hakatajima is then known for its salt and Ōshima, finally, for its Yoshiumi rose park, the last stop before the town of Imabari on the island of Shikoku. You can rent bicycles on site (here, for example: shimanami-cycle.or.jp/rental/english) for ¥3,000 per day minimum. You can also rent tandems, electric bikes or electric racing bikes. It's a recommended experience, especially in the fine spring and autumn months.
