It is one of the few architectural testimonies of the August 1945 disaster. Following the explosion, a few buildings, including the Genbaku Domu, were still standing, although partially destroyed. During the reconstruction of the city, it was decided to preserve this single building as a reminder of this tragic event. This vestige, which was originally the former palace of industrial development, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
