This Buddhist temple of the Rinzai sect was founded by Kyoan Genjaku in 1327. This national treasure has a Zen-style hall dating from 1327, one of the oldest examples of Zen Buddhist architecture in Japan. The narrow streets around the temple are very pleasant. Other temples and shrines, such as Kakuon-ji, which dates from 1296, Iminomiya-jinja and Nogi-jinja are worth a visit. They were all designated as "national treasures" in 1953.
