The Kikuya Residence was built in the first decade of the 17th century and is one of the earliest examples of merchant architecture of the Edo period. It is also one of the best preserved residences in Japan. It is listed as an important cultural property (five of its buildings to be precise). The Kikuya family was a very wealthy merchant family who ruled the city on behalf of the ruling Mori lords.
