The city of Misasa is currently running a campaign to have the site registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Mitoku is a place dedicated to the spiritual practices of Shugendō This sacred mountain whose ascent allows the rokkon shōjō, the purification of the six roots from which man perceives the world. The Nageiredō temple dating from the Heian period (794-1192) is classified as a Japanese national treasure. A legend tells us that a pilgrim monk with magical powers threw the temple into the rocks of the Mount, almost inaccessible. Nageiredō has the reputation of being the most difficult temple to access in Japan.
