Kongōfukuji is the 38th temple of the famous Shikoku pilgrimage. It is located at the southern end of the island, on a hill overlooking Cape Ashizuri. When Kōbō-Daishi built the temple complex, he carved and enshrined a three-sided statue of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara and named it Kongofukuji. The temple was also an imperial shrine for emperors and was also revered by military commanders. It is the longest distance between sacred temples in Shikoku, a real training for asceticism.
