ISANIWA JINJA
The date of foundation of the shrine is uncertain, but it is mentioned in writings from the Engi period (901-923) and has been attracting worshippers for over 1000 years. The present main shrine, painted in bright vermilion with many decorations, was rebuilt in 1667 by the lord of the Matsuyama estate in gratitude for the fulfilment of his prayers. It is designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The building stands at the top of a long stone staircase of 135 steps overlooking Dogo and Matsuyama-jo Castle.
