Built in 1603 on five floors (132 m) by Lord Yoshiakira Katō, the castle then became the property of the Matsudaira clan. It burned in 1624 and was rebuilt to three stories in 1642. Struck by lightning in 1784, it burned a second time and was rebuilt only in 1820 and finally completed in 1854. During the Edo period, the castle was again rebuilt with traditional materials. Its careful reconstruction makes it one of the major sites of its kind in Japan. It is easy to reach the top by a funicular railway.

Surplombant d'un côté un grand parc animé et de l'autre l'activité commerciale de la ville , il possède une vue panoramique magnifique sur la région.
