Located at about 15 minutes walk from Hakata station, Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines on Kyushu Island. Its buildings date back to 1623. The shrine is nestled in a small green area, in the middle of the frenzy of the district. One feels a certain serenity and a very pleasant tranquility there. One particularly appreciates the vermilion red and white of the structure of the sanctuary which contrasts with the green of the surrounding nature. The protective deity of the sailors is also venerated here.
