If you are passing through old Arita, you can appreciate these walls in a series of alleys parallel to the main street. These stone walls, which separate the alleys from the pottery workshops, have become a tourist attraction and offer an image of traditional, rural Japan. They are made by cementing waste bricks (tombai), which were used to build a kiln and tools, with red clay. These alleys are very photogenic. The tombai walls give a special charm to the winding streets of Arita.
