SHIMABARA CASTLE
The castle was built in 1624. In 1637, 38,000 peasants revolted against the lords of Shimabara and Amakusa at the announcement of new taxes. The daimyōs failed to subdue them. The rebels were then attacked by 200,000 men, commanded by Masanobu Matsudaira, to whom the Dutch artillery had lent a hand. The rebels were forced to surrender and the 38,000 Christians were put to the sword in April 1638. Shimabara-jō has a five-story keep, restored in 1965, which houses a museum on the history of Christianity in Japan.
