This relatively recent shrine was erected in memory of the former daimyo of the Satsuma domain, Nariakira Shimazu (1809-1858). He spent a lot of energy to open his country to western industrial techniques. He is a benefactor of the foundation of modern Japan. This is not a must-see in itself, but it can be combined with a visit to the Shiroyama Observatory, the shrine located right at the foot of the mountain.
