Only the ramparts remain today of the main castle of the Itō clan, which flourished for 280 years from 1588 to the early Meiji period. The imposing Ōte-mon Gate (1978) and some other buildings have been rebuilt to the original. In the castle museum are displayed more than 200 historical items, such as armor and weapons. The Yōshōkan House, whose garden includes the view of Mt. Atago-san, is located right at the entrance of the castle. The area was designated as a preservation district of traditional building groups, in 1977.
