Sanctuary – Place of pilgrimage

This shrine is dedicated, like the one at Kashihara, to the emperor Jimmu, whom Japanese tradition places in 660 bc. The shrine buildings, built of plain, unpainted cedar, are in the center of a large, quiet forest, north of which the Sōgōhakubutsukan Prefectural Museum has interesting archaeological collections. Indeed, here we see the results of excavations at Saito, 25 km from Miyazaki, which highlight the famous keyhole kofuns or burial mounds dating from the 6th century AD.
