Although the castle is not a must-see, it is said to be the smallest in Japan, the samurai village is really interesting. Several residences of medieval lords are visible. Called the little Kyoto of Oita, this historic castle town offers a trip back to the past during the Edo period. You can rent kimonos here for an even more exotic experience. Visit WARAKUAN Kimono Rental, for example, which offers over 250 styles of kimonos. It's a charming walk through the gates of Beppu.
