NAMINOUE-GU
The Naminoue-gū, "shrine above the waves," is located on a promontory overlooking the ocean. It was built in 1461 and dedicated to the three deities of Kumano (Hongū, Shingū and Nachi). These three deities became the avatars of Amida, Yakushi and finally Kannon. They are also the guardians of Gokoku-ji temple, the first temple of the Ryūkyū dynasty. In 1993, the reconstruction of the Honden (main shrine) was completed as part of the Heisei reconstruction project. It has been a designated cultural property of Naha City since 2006.
