The museum is the main memorial to the Battle of Okinawa, which took place during World War II on the main island. The purpose of the prefectural museum is to promote peace through the study and research of the deadly events that resulted in the deaths of 240,000 people, both civilians and military, in the final days of the Pacific War in 1945. The museum contains eyewitness accounts, photographs and artifacts of the soldiers.
