The remains of Nakagusuku Castle stand on a 167 meter high hill overlooking Nakagusuku Bay. It was built to prevent attacks from the east, initiated by Lord Amawari of Katsuren Castle. This castle was the home of the great chief Gosamaru. There are differences in the masonry techniques used to build the castle, which suggest that the fortress has undergone several changes over the years. The site was inscribed on the Register of World Heritage Sites in December 2000.
