ST FAGANS NATIONAL MUSEUM OF HISTORY
A few miles from Cardiff, the Welsh Life Museum is one of the few museums in Europe to be open-air. It is rather a large park with abundant vegetation, forest, waterfalls...
Created in 1947, the museum includes about fifty buildings, old farms, houses, shops typically Welsh, from the Celtic era to today! It is a true journey into the past and the daily lives of Welsh people, rich or poor, from past centuries. The houses were rebuilt stone by stone and furnished as if their inhabitants had just left the area. While stables, pigsty, hen houses, stables and stables are populated by animals, the bakery, tannery and pottery are still run by craftsmen: flour and bread can be bought there.
The Museum of Rural Life in Wales is located in the park of St. Fagans Castle, Elizabethan Manor House, built in 1580, where the furniture is admirable, especially the elaborate hall chairs and woodwork. On the first floor, the gallery is decorated with 17th century English tapestries that illustrate the history of Callisto and Diana from Les Métamorphoses d'Ovide. Depending on the rooms, the furniture changes period and offers a splendid panorama of styles throughout the ages. All this is immersed in a quiet and tasteful harmony, facing a typical garden from the early 18th century, spread out on terraces up to the river and in a labyrinth on the inside.
