Dominating an impressive 12-hectare site, this castle is the most imposing in the country and the second largest in Britain, after Windsor. It is the perfect example of a medieval castle: crenellated towers, drawbridge, keeps... Built on the remains of a Roman fort and the ruins of a Norman fort, the castle was erected in the 13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord Gilbert de Clare for defensive purposes: to protect himself from Llywelyn the Great. However, Llywelyn the Great succeeded in destroying a large part of the castle, and the English quickly rebuilt it.

Premier chateau que nous avons visité lors de notre séjour en Gales, il nous a laissé une forte impression. Même si une partie est en ruine (il date du XIIème siècle et a subit beaucoup d'assauts), il est possible de rentrer à l'interieur et de trouver de belles pièces (quasiment toutes non meublées comme tous les autres chateau de la région que nous avons visiter ensuite): Des zones sont aménager, expliquant comment le chateau se défendait, on peut aussi approcher de près baliste, trebuchet et catapulte. Pour moi, une visite à faire, pour entamer le voyag, d'autant plus si on prend l'Explorer Pass (à acheter sur place).
