The date of its foundation is unknown, but according to the legend, it was built in the early 14th century, where a battle between Muscovites and Pereslavlians took place on June 8, 1304. In the 16th century, the monastery attracted the attention of Ivan the Terrible, who had a cathedral built there named after his newborn son, Theodore. Since 1667 it has been a women's monastery, nowadays housing about 20 nuns. It is possible to have a guided tour in the monastery enclosure and even to have lunch in the canteen.
