The "botik" of Peter I is also a museum of the Navy which exhibits all kinds of navigational instruments and sculptures and paintings illustrating the past of the Russian fleet. The emperor was determined to provide Russia with a fleet, he looked for a suitable site for its development and in June 1689, five ships were built in Pereslavl. The whole complex was destroyed by fire in 1783; by a miracle, a small boat called Fortune escaped the flames and can be visited today.
