Yaroslavl's location, at the crossroads between Moscow and the White Sea, Europe and Siberia, favoured the development of its trade, and thus of the commercial district with its factories and shipyards.
The main monument is the Church of St. Nicholas at the corner of Narodni and Bolkov Streets dating from 1622.
The houses of the merchants. The house of Mayor Matveievski (16a Chelyuskintcev Square) is distinguished by its two wings, while the house of Vankrameiv (at 19) adopts a Baroque style. The house of Nikitin (6 Svobody Street) adopts classical architecture.
