BOGORODITE MONASTERY
This monastery was founded in the early 13th century. It is here that the famous Lavrentievsky chronicles were written, one of the most extensive primary sources on the medieval Slavic world. After the revolution, this beautiful religious and princely building was requisitioned by the local Bolsheviks who turned it into the headquarters of the local KGB where suspects were imprisoned and interrogated. Since then, the monks have resettled there, taking advantage of the religious revival that has taken place since the fall of the USSR.
