Located in the middle of a small square of greenery behind the Petrozavodsk tractor factory, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the largest building in the city. It was built in 1819 in honour of Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812. During the Soviet period, it hosted the regional museum and then resumed its initial function in the 1990s. For its complete restoration in 2000, new bells were cast using traditional techniques.
