Rotor Volgograd (former Traktor Stalingrad) is one of the ambassadors of the very rich industrial and popular history of football in Russia. Created in 1929, the club first obtained excellent results before slightly declining after the 1960 s and made returns between first, second and third Soviet divisions. In 1991, while the USSR disappeared, the Rotor finished first of the Soviet league championship (Division 2) and was promoted, thus forming part of the first brood of the Russian 1 League. Then start the golden years of the club: unlike most of his compatriots, it was during the 1990 s that the Rotor prospered, and by far, one of Russia's best clubs: second of the championship in 1995, they regularly reach the quarter and semi-finals. The club is also distinguished at European level: present four seasons in the Europa League (at the time UEFA Cup), he remains in memory for his victory in 1995 against Manchester United who played at home. With a 0-0 in the game going to Volgograd and a 2-2 in the back game in the Old Trafford stadium, it's the Rotor that scored the most goals outside and the English are therefore eliminated. The Rotor will be removed from the next tower by the Girondins of Bordeaux, but the legend is launched.
Alas, the glory of the club is short-lived, and as early as 2005, it begins a descent into the underworld that continues until its fourth Russian division (amateurs) in 2015. The club then resumed and went back to the third division, then second in 2017/18, but in mid-season, it was a good last of the ranking…
