LENIN STATUE

The Kostromiens do not give him immense artistic value as long as they know their classics: the base and the statue do not have the same vision of history. The monument, originally planned for the tricentennial of the Romanov family (1913), was to glorify the tsar and his family. The first level was decorated with sculptures reminiscent of the election of Michel Romanov but, the times changed, the bas-reliefs were dedicated to the struggle of the Soviet people against Tsarist yoke. Finally, in the 1960 ' s, instead of the imperial family, appeared a monumental statue of Lenin, lacking in harmony, the members of the Soviet helmsman being relatively disproportionate to his body. In the archives of the city, or in the works devoted to it, the plans of the original project, a little pompous but at least homogeneous, can be found.
In this place, there was once the main cathedral and the Kremlin, as well as the steeple dominating the whole city. In 1934, under Stalin, the cathedral was demolished because the city, it seems, lacked bricks!
