STE SOPHIE DE VOLOGDA CATHEDRAL

The church was built in only two years, from 1568 to 1570, at the instigation of Ivan the Terrible, on the model of the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Moscow Kremlin. Inside, the walls are entirely covered with 17th century frescoes and the impressive iconostasis dates from the first half of the 18th century. The neo-gothic bell tower is more recent (19th century) but still contains some bells from the 17th century. To admire them, take the stairs leading up.
