There are still some remains of the old Turkish fortress, which are worth a visit. At the end of the town centre, the fortress still stands partly upright and you can walk among the remains of its towers. The strategic position a few km from the sea and dominating above the Don is then quite clear. Within the fortress walls, there is also the impressive bronze Taganrog Gate, taken by the Russians when they seized the city.
