This majestic cathedral, visible from almost everywhere in the city, was built in one century, from the mid 17th to the mid 18th century. It is located on Bolshaya Sovetskaya Street, on the site of a much older church that was destroyed during the Poles' takeover of Smolensk. Its architecture is a striking blend of Russian and Baroque styles. It contains the famous icon of the Virgin and Child, imitated and reproduced until today.

This cathedral is unmissable for travellers passing through Smolensk! Beautiful icons and impressive architecture. Inside, the holy water is spread to the ladle, is large cauldrons by sister dressed in white. People from the city queue with plastic bottles.
